Moving CLIL forward: towards sustainable educational practices
The Working CLIL Colloquium is a biennial event which brings together practitioners, researchers and teacher educators to exchange perspectives on core issues in Content and Language Integrated Learning. The first Colloquium was held in 2018 at the University of Porto and coincided with the launch of the Working CLIL research strand of CETAPS https://www.cetaps.com/clil/. The second took place online in 2021 due to the Covid pandemic. In 2023, the Colloquium is once again presential at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto.
After over two decades of exponential growth which have seen CLIL/bilingual education evolve across continents, it is time to take stock and explore appropriate strategies, ideas and impactful educational research that is capable of moving CLIL/bilingual education forward and making it a sustainable practice across educational levels. Sharing ideas and understandings within and beyond national contexts may create new synergies and ways of working that may be beneficial for the future of CLIL/bilingual education.
This Colloquium is intended for: content and language teachers from pre-primary to higher education who are engaged in CLIL or are considering future involvement; school directors and CLIL coordinators; CLIL teacher educators; educational researchers and scholars.
The main topics as we consider MOVING CLIL FORWARD are:
· Language-aware teaching and learning across the curriculum
· Conceptualising and working with diversity
· Developing disciplinary literacy
· Pluriliteracies
· Materials analysis, design and use
· Development/deeper learning within educational year groups
· Transitioning across educational levels
· The CLILing of foreign language teaching
· Teacher collaboration
· Coordination of CLIL projects/bilingual education
· Professional development for CLIL teachers: challenges and opportunities
The dual purpose of the colloquium is to provide:
· teacher education for CLIL through workshops and presentations given by experienced CLIL practitioners, educational researchers and teacher educators;
· opportunities for disseminating the results of educational research, projects and practitioner experiences of CLIL across educational levels.
Workshops (60 minutes)
If you are a CLIL/bilingual education practitioner, scholar or teacher educator, we would like to count on your participation in this event in the quality of Workshop Facilitator.
We welcome proposals for 60-minute workshops on the Colloquium topics.
Your proposal should be principled and practical. It should indicate:
1. the educational level for CLIL - pre-primary/primary/secondary/higher education or all/general;
2. specific subject area(s) reference, e.g., Geography, History or all/general;
3. intended activities for participants.
Paper presentations (20 minutes presentation + 10 minutes discussion)
We welcome paper presentations which provide results of research, project outcomes, and teacher reflections on CLIL experience in relation to the Colloquium topics.
Abstract submission
Abstracts for workshops and paper presentations should be sent via Google forms . Abstracts will be subject to blind peer review.
Deadline for submission: 13 March 2023
Confirmation of acceptance: 3 April 2023
The languages of the event are English and Portuguese.
A special issue e-Teals has been commissioned for 2024 and will feature selected papers from the colloquium. All papers will be peer-reviewed. You can find more information about this publication here.
For Portuguese school teachers, each day of the Colloquium is considered an “ação de curta duração” for professional development. Attendance will be registered and certificates issued for teachers who attend one or both full days of the Colloquium.
